Matthew Bannister prepares for a Strange Day’s Night

– a celebration of the Beatles’ songs

BeatlesPowertool Records’ resident Beatles fanatic Matthew Bannister is warming up for his performance at A Strange Day’s Night – the Play It Strange celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four’s New Zealand tour.

Bannister has well and truly earned his Abbey Road stripes – and the respect of Beatles aficionados worldwide – following the release of his respectful, innovative and highly acclaimed ‘Evolver’, his personal tribute to ‘Revolver’.

Listen to Evolver here.

The Beatles played the Auckland Town Hall on the 24th and 25th June 1964. Fifty years later, Beatles songs will again rock the same stage over two big nights at A Strange Day’s Night. A fund-raiser for Play It Strange, the shows will feature more than 150 NZ artists covering the full breadth of the Beatles oeuvre.

Pop masters such as Matthew Bannister, Tim Finn, Graham Brazier, Jordan Luck, Eddie Rayner, Jason Kerrison, Fiona Macdonald, SJD and more will playing with emerging young performers from a variety of Auckland secondary schools.

A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

Seeds Roulettes LuchaIt’s a psychedelic rock tour-de-force: 3 of Auckland’s finest guitar bands combine forces for an aural onslaught of twisted pop and deep psych vibes.

Seeds of Orbit have listened to the people’s pleas for a mighty homegrown psychedelic band – and boy, have they answered them. Something of a supergroup, this three-piece has a deep love for heavy mod, stoner rock and acid folk. Made up of Mark Petersound (aka Mark PetersenStraitjacket Fits, Cabbage Bomber, Shaft), Bridgette Bowie (The Doris Days, Cabbage Bomber and legendary all-girl punk band Fake Purr), and Marty Doo (NZ: The Beads;Australia: Glide, Challenger 7, Scruffs, Grapefruit),their mind-alteringly psychedelic debut EP ‘Seeds of Orbit’ is out now on Powertool Records – and they really bring it to life when they play live!
Listen to the EP here.

The Roulettes’ second, self-titled album is definitive of the band’s predilections, obsessions and strengths. Short punchy rock/pop gems with lyrics to pay attention to are delivered with maximum energy. The Roulettes was formed by Ben and Justin in Auckland in the early 2000s from the ashes of alcohol-fuelled Dunedin rock’n’roll bands (Funhouse, Bike). They released two EPs (You Want It and Unread Books) before settling on the ever-awesome Mark Queenin (Bike, Garageland) on drums.“Located between power pop, indie rock and with a fine sense of focused economy… (songs which) would slip in comfortably alongside the best of US indie rock…” Graham Reid,

Loud Ghost: Courtesy of The Institute of Telepathic Research, Loud Ghost is DHarkness (New Telepathics, Spacesuit, Serafin) on guitar and vocals, Mark Hussey on drums and Sam Taylor on bass. Loud Ghost recently for beloved US indie rockers Sebadoh. Their debut single ‘Fire Up’ is being released on August 4, and they’ve been quietly working away on their album at Tom Healey’s Paquin studio. Loud Ghost on Facebook
